Deutsche Telekom Suspected of Privacy Breaches

Security staff at telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom are suspected of breaching German data privacy laws during a secret attempt to identify the sources of high-level leaks to the media, the company said Saturday, May 24.

Using the company’s own records of millions of numbers dialed, the dates and the durations, the internal-security unit had hunted for possible matches between news reporters and Telekom directors.

Both public prosecutors and a German law firm have been assigned to investigate the suspected breach three years ago of German data-retention laws. Bonn-based Telekom said it had purged the security department last year to ensure it operated within the law.

I onda lijepo usporediš odlazne mailove i … eh…

“I am shocked about these accusations,” Deutsche Telekom Chief Executive Officer Rene Obermann said in the statement. “We take this issue very seriously and will cooperate with the prosecutors” in determining who was responsible.

Deutsche Telekom starts talks with Macedonian competition authorities
Deutsche Telekom representatives met on 19 May with the competition regulator in Macedonia, which will determine whether the German company’s deal with Greek operator OTE will create a monopoly in Macedonia. In Macedonia, Deutsche Telecom owns incumbent operator Makedonski Telekom, while OTE owns the second mobile operator Cosmofon. The two companies hold more than 90 percent of the mobile telephony market in Macedonia, while the rest is held by the third mobile operator VIP. In the eyes of the law, a company has a dominant position if it holds more than 40 percent of a relevant market in Macedonia, while two or more companies are dominant if they hold more than 60 percent of the market. If a company holds more than 40 percent of the market through mergers or acquisitions, it must notify the Commission for the Protection of Competition.

Prosto mi ih dođe žao kad ih ovak rsture po medijima, suza mi krene na oko… mam…  čisto im kvare posao i kupovinu po svijetu, i Šveđani (a posebno Šveđanke) su zabrinuti tko će to kupiti njihovu Teliu…

Swedish military concerned over foreign bidders for TeliaSonera
Sweden’s armed forces have expressed concern that any sale of TeliaSonera to a foreign buyer could threaten national security. The Swedish government has put its 37 percent stake in the national carrier on a list of proposed divestments, while the operator has also been subject to rumours of a possible bid from France Telecom. The military uses TeliaSonera’s network and whoever controls the operator could access secret locations of military hardware and listen to or hijack internal communications. "Any owner, domestic or foreign, of TeliaSonera must be thoroughly investigated from a security point of view. An owner that is not trustworthy could use its knowledge to damage Sweden," Per Nilsson, head of the armed forces command, control and communications division, told the Financial Times. Bankers close to the TeliaSonera deal believe other possible bidders could include Deutsche Telekom, Chinese telecoms operators and Chinese or Middle East sovereign wealth funds. Mats Odell, the minister in charge of the privatisation, said the government has been assessing security related questions since last year but has asked the military for an additional report by mid-June because "we didn’t get all the answers". He said the government wanted the report to address topics such as TeliaSonera’s ownership structure, the possible security implications of the sale and the costs of any changes.

Telekom Slovenije receives lawsuit from Amis TelekomSlovenian operator Telekom Slovenije has received a lawsuit from Amis Telekom claiming damages of EUR 56.825 million for the incumbent’s alleged abuse of its dominant market position. The allegations centre on the inter-operator broadband access market, unbundled local loop and sub-loop access market, fiber-optics connections to collocations and price cuts. Telekom Slovenije will respond to the lawsuit in the legally required time, and estimates that the lawsuit is completely groundless.
