High-definition television will be seen in 44 million households worldwide by the end of this year, according to a new forecast by Informa Telecoms & Media.
4% of households around the world will actively watch HDTV programming by the end of 2008, doubling from 2% at the end of 2007.
“A major contributing factor is that set and set-top box prices have fallen substantially in the last two years,” commented Informa’s principal media analyst, Simon Murray.

Two cable TV companies serving Siouxland communities say their subscribers with analog televisions won’t even notice next February when all full-power broadcast channels must start sending out only a high definition signal.
"If a Cable One customer has a TV hooked up to a cable outlet, it will continue to work as it does today," said Cheryl Goettsche, Cable One general manager. "They won’t need a (converter) box." Goettsche said the company will convert the digital signals to analog for those customers before sending it out on the cable.
Cable One serves Sioux City, South Sioux City, Dakota Dunes and North Sioux City.

HDTVs Shrink
Americans’ lust for big-screen flat panel TVs looks to be getting smaller.
According to data released by the research firm, Pacific Media Associates, the share of the TV market for 30 to 34-inch L.C.D. TVs jumped to 24 percent in February from 16 percent in January.
That move was at the expense of larger sets. Market share sales for 45 to 49-inch L.C.D. TVs dropped to 14 percent from 18 percent and the 40- to 44-inch L.C.D. and plasma segment moved to 18 percent from 20 percent.
The reason, according to Alfred Poor, Pacific Media Associates’ senior research associate, is obvious: it’s the economy.
“I imagine that a lot of home equity money went into HDTVs,” Mr. Poor said. “Many consumers do not have the income to buy an HDTV, and more of them no longer have the credit.”

Mitsubishi demonstrated prototype displays based on laser technology at CES 2008 in January, and has now announced that the ‘LaserVue’ displays will be available in stores this autumn.
Pricing details and detailed specs will not be available until June, but it’s likely that the LaserVue sets, which are the first ever laser powered televisions, will be at the higher end of the HDTV range.

Verizon Communications is standing by its claim that FiOS TV delivers “uncompressed” high-definition channels, while acknowledging that the video it distributes to customers is already compressed by programmers.

Verizon is running a TV ad campaign claiming that FiOS TV delivers “pure uncompressed high definition,” touting the supposedly superior picture quality available through the service over cable.

In one of the spots, a fictional cable customer excitedly plugs a coaxial cable into the back of a flat-panel HDTV set, saying, “This is going to look amazing!”—only to watch the TV spit the cable out. The hapless customer repeatedly tries to reconnect the cable, without success.

But the statement that FiOS TV delivers “uncompressed” video is, on its face, not true. All digital video that is delivered by commercial cable, telco or satellite TV services must be compressed.

A single uncompressed 1080i HDTV stream would consume around 1.5 Gigabits per second. That would occupy almost two-thirds the capacity of one Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) wavelength, the newer-generation fiber-optic networking technology Verizon is deploying for FiOS.

In fact, Verizon delivers video in MPEG-2 format—the same compression technology used by virtually every cable operator.

Hehe, je kompresirano ali nije kompresirano, u stvari je kodirano pa dekodirano jer nekodirano baš i ne bi prolazilo u multicastu tj. … uh… kolko bi to optike trebalo. A prvi HDTV video sam gledao kad smo neš testirali IPTV pa je na serveru bio neki NASA-in video klip snimljne iz SpaceShutla, sve to prikazano na FullHD LCD-u… e… prestravio sam se koliko je to predobro, bode oči. A evo ih opet, ovo se svakako ispalti pogledati, u stvari to treba puštati u dućanima da se vidi što je HDTV.

NASA Television to broadcast HD Earth
ASA has announced that it will broadcast dramatic views of Earth from images taken by its astronauts in high definition television (HDTV) in honor of Earth Day, April 22, 2008.
A special hour-long program on NASA Television will show views of Earth taken in High Definition (HD) by astronauts on the space shuttle and the International Space Station.
NASA Television is available through the Web at NASA TV and on your local cable or satellite television system.
The program will be first aired for two hours beginning at 8 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on Friday, April 18, 2008 (which is already past, unfortunately).
However, a second broadcast will air on Monday, April 21, 2008, beginning at 6 a.m. It will repeat itself throughout the day and onto the next day, until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2008–Earth Day 2008.
