eMail Portability

Should ISPs Forward E-mail When You Move?

The post office will forward your mail to your new address when you move, and wireless phone carriers are required to port your number to your next provider. So should ISPs be forced to forward your mail to your new ISP? The FCC is exploring the requirement after an AOL customer claims she lost important business revenue when AOL canceled her account due to miscommunication. From her petition (pdf) to the FCC.
The time is ripe for the Commission to step forward and impose a regulatory obligation on ISPs which is sorely needed and long overdue. I therefore petition the Commission to initiate a rulemaking immediately in order to prevent other Americans from experiencing the cavalier and crushing loss which I suffered at the hands of America Online.

Yeah, we’re not sure why anybody in their right mind would use a sole AOL account for business, either. There’s also the question of whether the FCC has the legal authority to regulate e-mail. Still, the user is pushing the FCC to act, though we doubt anything will come of it. "The real news here is that someone got AOL to cancel an account," jokes one of our commenters.
