Not only ordinary mortals sing the ‘Telekom’ blues

8 August 2007

For years, Germans have moaned about the poor service provided by the formerly state-run Deutsche Telekom. These days, another voice has joined the chorus – that of the fashion model whose face graces the company’s posters around the country.

The model, Dora, is complaining that she has waited for three months for the company to install her new phone line, she told the tabloid, Bild. She said she will wait one more week before opting for another provider. Dora has been the face of a new ad campaign for the company’s high-speed Internet connection.

Waits of months for new service are not uncommon with Deutsche Telekom. And getting a response from the comany is notoriously difficult –and expensive.

Still, Bild quoted a Telekom official saying they would be in touch with Dora right away.

Foolish Forecast: Deutsche Telekom Under Repair

What management says:
With the ongoing decay in domestic revenue, Deutsche Telekom has been shoring up defenses at home while implementing a fast-moving offense abroad. Stiff competition and a crushing regulatory environment in Germany led to a revenue decline of 5.1% there last quarter. Stating the obvious, CEO Rene Obermann acknowledged that "we are fully aware that here in Germany we are exposed to considerable competitive pressure." According to the company, the way out of the mess "is to improve the company’s competitive standing" domestically. Hmm, OK.

To this end, the company is implementing a "focus, fix and grow" strategy that has it plugging leaky revenue holes while expanding in high-growth markets abroad. Similar to global telecoms such as Vodafone (NYSE: VOD), Telefonica (NYSE: TEF), and VimpelCom (NYSE: VIP), Deutsche Telekom is tapping more fertile growth markets in developing countries.

Ali brinu se oni i za ekologiju i stare mobitele. Evo jedna odlična reklama.

T-Mobile wants our phones

A new survey from T-Mobile suggests that the UK population is sitting on 52.3 million old phones, with a combined value of £1.1bn, and they’ve kindly offered to take them off our hands too.

They go on to suggest that these phones could be used to pay for 39,000 nurses, or to buy the entire Chelsea football squad nearly four times over, though how nurses would feel about being paid in old phones isn’t clear.

T-Mobile would like us to give the money to charity, any charity, but they’ll hand over cash if asked. Just drop into a T-Mobile shop and ask for a free, post-paid, envelope, then fill in your address and/or chosen charity. Fonebak (the organisation running the scheme) will send on the dough (averaging £22.40, apparently) once they’ve checked the phone’s in working order, otherwise they’ll dismantle and recycle.

Ne znam, ja bi mozda isao na staro za novo foru… recimo Samsung blast… :-)

Samsung "Blast" launches on T-Mobile in the States

8 August 2007 – Samsung has launched the "Blast" (or the SGH-T729) in the States, exclusive to T-Mobile.

Described as "fierce-looking" (think that means "fine" in the US, rather than scary) this is a crimson and black slider phone that conceals a Qwerty-esque keypad for easy text entry.

Ili bi se reklamirao da uz nešto hakiranja podržavam i famozni iPhone… zašto ne…

iPhone stigao i radi u Hrvatskoj

Perspectives about the news from people in the news

We wanted to give you a heads-up on a new, experimental feature we’ll be trying out on the Google News home page. Starting this week, we’ll be displaying reader comments on stories in Google News, but with a bit of a twist…

We’ll be trying out a mechanism for publishing comments from a special subset of readers: those people or organizations who were actual participants in the story in question. Our long-term vision is that any participant will be able to send in their comments, and we’ll show them next to the articles about the story. Comments will be published in full, without any edits, but marked as "comments" so readers know it’s the individual’s perspective, rather than part of a journalist’s report.
